Summer Reading Celebration!

Summer Reading participants should be working on their exhibits for the Art Show by now! Just 2 weeks to go!

Remember- choose a book that relates to our theme of "Go Green" and fill out the book report form included in your registration packet - then, Create something from RECYCLABLE MATERIALS that has to do with your book, to display at the Art Exhibit on Saturday, August 21st!

Please plan to bring your recycled craft exhibits to the library between 9-11am that morning to put on display- they should remain on display until at least 1pm, and removed by 2pm, when the library closes.

JJs Ice Cream will be providing delicious ice cream and toppings for sundaes, beginning at 11am.

Registration has begun! Saturday, June 19th was the first day to sign-up for this year's program, but you can still sign up, at the circulation desk during regular library hours.

Beginning on June 29th, each week that you visit the library and check out an item, you will receive the "Prize of the Week" - something different each week- so be sure to make a weekly visit to the library part of your summer routine!

Wow, it's been a while since I've had a chance to update this blog! Things have certainly been busy and we have been short-staffed at the library! I will try to update this page more often, but to help w/the StoryTime theme updates, I have created a Facebook group specifically for this purpose, which is super-easy and quick to update!

Story Time ... all about Fall!

Nearing the end of October already and it's been a busy Fall so far! During September and October our Storytime sessions haven't been very crowded, as everyone is still settling into new school schedules and routines. Our Thursday storytimes, for ages 3-6, have been focusing on Fall themes like Back-to-School, Apples, Leaves, Changing Seasons and Pumpkins.

We will be sharing some Halloween stories this week, and then moving on to Thanksgiving and Hibernation in November!

Friday mornings have been getting more and more popular as people tell their friends about all the fun we have at TinyTots LapSit StoryTime! This week, I expect to see lots of little pumpkins, black cats and who-knows-what else as the babies like to get dressed up!

I cannot even believe how quickly the summer flew by! It is already time for Back-to-School! I will be posting storytime themes soon, as we get back into the Fall routine, with 2 storytime sessions each Thursday for ages 3-6 and the return of our TinyTots LapSit StoryTime which will resume Next Friday at 10:30 for babies & toddlers up to age 3. But first .... Let's take a peek at our end-of-summer celebration, held on Saturday, August 15th! Here are some photos of the wonderful art exhibits that were on display, our rocket-making workshop and Free Ice Cream courtesy of JJs Ice Cream on Rte 140 in UPTON!

9:00-9:30am: Summer Reading Participants who completed a project based on a space-themed book of their choice are invited to bring their project to the Art Exhibit at the Library. Projects will be on display until 1:30pm for the public to see, and should be taken home by closing at 2pm.
10:30-11:30: stop by to make an alka-seltzer-powered rocket and blast it off! (appropriate for ages 7+)
11:30: join us for ICE CREAM courtesy of JJ’s Ice Cream of Upton! JJ's owner Johnna Gorman will be arriving at 11:30 and will scoop ice cream until it is gone (or 1:30, whichever comes first!)
JJ the Cow will also be visiting, so bring your camera!
Don't forget to bring your reading logs with you, to get prizes from the treasure chest, and be sure to check out our Wall of Star Readers while you're here!

Please Note: The day's activities will be held in the Library and on the lawn (NOT in the Town Hall as originally stated).

UFund's Start-U-Reading program came to the Upton Town Library today for a very special Early Literacy Event, which included a visit from BUZZ LIGHTYEAR!

In order to better plan and prepare for our Summer Program Finale Event, we're asking that participants who plan to display a project in the Art Exhibit please let us know by THIS FRIDAY so we can be sure we have adequate display space and enough ribbons!

The Art Exhibit & Ice Cream Social will take place on the Library's lawn on Saturday, August 15th. (We will not be using the Town Hall, as was previously stated.) Projects need to be delivered to the library between 9-9:30am, with judging beginning at 9:30 and ribbons awarded at 10. The ribbons will remain on the projects, and the projects will remain on display until 2pm so that everyone can come see the wonderful spacey creations you have been working on this summer!

We have our first official "STAR" on our Wall of Star Readers!

Declan H was the first to complete his entire reading log (25 hours of reading). For completing the log he received a Star Reader certificate to keep, and a star to decorate for display. Way to go, Declan! Congratulations!!

Remember to keep track of the time you spend reading this summer!

For every 2-hrs you get to choose a prize from our Treasure Chest, and for 25-hrs, you, too, will receive a certificate and have the opportunity to decorate a star to display!

We have HS students from the Mendon-Upton Spanish Immersion program coming to the library to conduct this storytime for the next 4 weeks!

The program is designed with students of the Spanish Immersion Program in mind, but is open to all children, ages 5-8, who would like to attend.

Part of this year's summer reading program involves reading a book of your choice about Space ... it can be about the Moon, Sun, Stars, Space Travel .... ANYTHING related to the theme: STARSHIP ADVENTURE! Baby Sign Language Class

BabySigns with Paula Flaherty Bolotin will be held at the Upton Town Library during the month of June.

Paula received funding through the Upton Cultural Council to provide a 4-week BabySigns class for Upton residents and their babies (appropriate for ages birth to 3yrs) so the class is FREE! Who is Tillie, you ask?

Tillie is a real live hen who stars in her very own picture book, Tillie Lays an Egg. Tillie, along with her owner, Terry Golson, the author of the book, will be visiting the Upton Town Hall on Thursday, May 14th at 2:30. (This special author appearance will be held, instead of our regularly-scheduled afternoon storytime session.)

Copies of Tillie Lays an Egg are currently available for purchase at Kaleidoscope Books, Cards & Gifts and can be brought to this event for Terry to sign. Copies will also be availble to purchase at the event. Following the storytime and booksigning, Terry has offered to stay a while longer to meet with members of the Upton 4-H Club, along with anyone else who may be interested in learning more about keeping backyard chickens!

In like a Lion and out like a Lamb .... well, once again, March certainly did arrive like a Lion, with a big storm canceling school on Monday, March 2nd! That was Read Across America Day, so along with Memorial School in Upton, we celebrated on Thursday, March 5, making our theme The Cat in the Hat! Check out some pictures by clicking here!

StoryTime Supplies: Wish List

At a recent StoryTime session, some very thoughtful parents asked if they could donate supplies for StoryTime craft projects, and with the current budget situation we are facing, this got me thinking about putting together a Wish List!

Here is a list of the items that we go through the most at StoryTime:

Glue Sticks
Construction Paper (9"x12")
Card Stock/heavy-weight paper (8.5"x11")
Paper plates

and some other items that we would certainly appreciate as well:

Tissues!
Wet wipes
re-sealable bags (sandwich size and gallon size)
masking tape

misc. craft supplies and collage-type materials, such as:

fabric scraps, rick-rack, ribbon
wallpaper samples
googly eyes
pom-poms
craft feathers
cotton balls
small paper plates/bowls
cardboard tubes (ie: bathroom tissue rolls)

If you are able to donate any of these items we would truly appreciate it! If you have other items you would like to donate, please ask first, as our supply space is very limited!

StoryTime @ Kaleidoscope!

OK, it's official! The storytime I mentioned last week, to be held at Kaleidoscope Books, Cards & Gifts, is definitely ON for
THIS WEDNESDAY at 1:00pm!

I will be reading the classic story of The Gingerbread Baby, re-told and illustrated by Jan Brett, followed by Jan Brett's newest book, an original sequel, Gingerbread Friends. Copies of these, and other books by this popular author, will be available for sale.

Please remember that 10% of all sales on Wednesday, December 17th will be donated to the Friends of the Upton Town Library!

And, in keeping with our Gingerbread Friends theme, I just heard this from Kaleidoscope's owner, Carrie Cilley:

"Thanks to a wonderful donation from Fresco's (they have a fabulous pastry chef) we will also have gingerbread cookies available for the children."

Memorial School's 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Lynch assigned her class a Book Review project for December, which includes as one of the instructions: GO TO THE UPTON TOWN LIBRARY! What a great assignment! The books for this project--COOK BOOKS!-- are all on display on our School Projects shelf near the window in the Children's area, along with a copy of the actual assignment.

OK, so it's December already and I forgot to post the storytime themes! sorry! Here they are!
Today the theme was Jingle Bells!! And we read (or rather SANG!) these 2 books:

and made a jingle bell craft decoration to take home!
On the last 2 pages of Jingle Bells by Iza Trapani the words of the entire text appears, along with the sheet music for the carol, Jingle Bells. The verses in the book describe how children in other countries celebrate Christmas, all to the famous tune.

Next week the theme will be Reindeer.

The following week is Candles, when we learn how people all of the world celebrate the Winter Season with candles and light!

Some of you have checked out this book, wet pet: a flip-a-word book and requested more! soooo..... here you go! I just received these books today, and they should be on the Beginning Reader shelves next week! Here's a review from School Library Journal:

K-Gr 2: Children will be instantly attracted to the bold, colorful pictures in these books. Each title focuses on three different word families. Pig looks at words containing the letter combinations ig, ug, and at, while Snake features ake, oat, and ant. Peek-through pages transform illustrations to match the changing consonants (e.g., jig becomes dig ). While most of the pages feature only one or two words, the last page of each section is a review of all the words from the family. The bright, flat illustrations outlined in black are reminiscent of the artwork in Dick Bruna's Miffy books (Kodansha America), but are more colorful. These titles could be used with beginner readers or as an introduction to rhyming words. Each one includes a page about word families that adults might find helpful.

Last Friday, I accompanied ULTRA on a field trip to Barnes&Noble in Millbury, to purchase books for our Young Adult collection. While there, I picked up a few books for the younger kids as well. I've gotten several requests recently for a series by Henry Winkler, called Hank Zipzer, so I grabbed the first 5 books in that series.

Hibernation ...

At last week's PreSchool StoryTime sessions, we read stories about Bears getting ready for Winter .... and learned about HIBERNATION!

After the stories, the kids made a little craft to take home, using a brown pompom, a cardboard tube and some brown paper: A bear sleeping in his cave!

Storytime today was all about Cats at the Library!
After reading Excuse Me .... Are You a Witch? by Emily Horn and Pumpkin Cat by Ann Turner, the kids created cat pictures to take home.

In Excuse Me . . . Are You a Witch? a lonely little black cat named Herbert goes in search of a witch, after reading (in a book at the library!) that witches like black cats ... so he thinks that if he can find a witch then he won't be lonely anymore ...

I love this book! Reading it is so much fun, especially when you dress for the part!

This morning, and last Monday morning, we opened the Library for some very special guests! All of the First Graders from Memorial School visited the Library and the students got their own library cards!! Three of the classes visited last week, and 2 came this morning.

We started with a special 'big kids' storytime, when the students got to sit down and relax after walking to the library from school!

I read The Library by Sarah Stewart and then the kids each chose a book to check out with their NEW library cards to take home! A very fun experience for all!

Creativity at Storytime!

Taking a break from our Fall themes last week, I read one of my all-time favorite books, Christina Katerina and the Box, about a girl and her friend who use their imagination to create all kinds of wonderful adventures for themselves using an empty cardboard box.

The last time I read this book at StoryTime (November 2006), the kids -and parents- loved it! This time, I paired it with an open-ended craft activity: lots of 'junk'---cardboard tubes, plastic caps, coffee stirrers, etc and some glue ... and said OK, make something! Early Readers: I *LOVE* this new book by Mo Willems, and will be using it at StoryTime later this month! The October StoryTime schedule will be adjusted a bit, and we'll bump the theme of Hibernation into November.

Picture Books: This is an awesome book for older elementary school kids, and includes several Haiku poems ... would be great to use in a poetry and/or art class!

Children at today's storytime were busy making Autumn trees, by tracing their hand and forearm onto brown paper, cutting out the shape (a tree trunk & bare branches) and pasting it onto light blue paper. Colorful scraps of tissue paper were added for the Autumn leaves!

Hello Library Friends,
I am posting parts of an email I just rec'd here, to ask for your input ...
As most of you know, I love my job as the Children's/Young Adult Librarian here in Upton, and put a lot of effort into planning programs and activities. I thoroughly appreciate all feedback ... so I'm opening this up, sincerely asking for comments ...

Did others feel this way about storytime this week?
Are there other issues/concerns about themes or book selections?

It was certainly NOT my intent to offend anyone, and in the afternoon session I opted to read another Fairy book, as opposed to the one mentioned here, simply because this one (one of my personal favorites, I will happily admit!) is a bit long and didn't seem to hold the younger children's attention in the morning session -- they just wanted to get right to the part with the scissors and glue!

Here's an excerpt:

"... As you know, I love our local library, and visit it nearly every week with my kids. We've attended Story Time off and on . . . and always enjoy the songs and stories. I want to express my concern, however, at the particular selection of books presented last Thursday for the preschool age group.

Fairy Houses, by Tracy Kane, seemed innocuous enough -and who doesn't love nature?- but in conjunction with The Care and Feeding of Sprites, by the Spiderwick creators, and alongside Child of Faerie, Child of Earth, Story Time took on spiritual, if not religious, overtones.

As both a woman of faith and an avid reader, I try to foster my kids' imagination while also safeguarding them from darker spiritual elements found in books by the likes of Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. I realize that discerning where healthy fantasy ends and wicca begins is tricky, but in the future I hope to see our public library choose texts more carefully when reading to a diverse group of small children.

I hope that you won't be offended by my input, but I'm quite sure I'm not the only local mom who would prefer a traditional, wholesome curriculum for our little ones."

Time for Back-to-School, and time for Back-to-our regular StoryTime Schedule!

Today was the first day back to our 2-storytime schedule:

PreSchool StoryTime is held each Thursday, at 10:30am and again at 1:30pm.

This program is appropriate for 3-6 yr olds, and we do ask that you register on a monthly basis, for planning purposes. The sessions are held in the Children's Area at the Library, and include some picture books being read aloud, followed by an arts/crafts activity to go along with that week's theme.

The themes I have planned for this month include:

Sept 4: A is for Apple: Alphabet Fun

Sept 11: Get Ready to Build Fairy Houses! Faerie Stories

Sept. 18: Apples, Apples, Everywhere!

Sept. 25: It's Fall!

Wild Reads @ The Upton Town Library

The 2008 Summer Library Adventure: Final Report

This year’s registration began on Tuesday, June 10, and our Summer Program officially began on Wednesday, June 18 with a kick-off event featuring The University of NH’s traveling theatre troupe performing “The Ugly Duckling” at Nipmuc H.S., and ended with a finale event on Saturday, August 16^th, at the Library, featuring free Henna Tattoos, Make-Your-Own Sundaes and a Nintendo Wii system set up with the projection screen in the Children’s Area.

During the 10-weeks, we offered a total of 5 programs, with a total of 18 sessions and 7 events, with a grand total of 1,999 people attending! Registration was open to children ages 1-17, and a total of 601 signed up (86 MORE than last year!) Of that number, we calculated a participation total of 412 (up from 295 last year), roughly 69% (up from 57% last year). Participation was defined as redeeming clock hours as part of the Reading program, and/or attending programs or events. Participants logged 3,241 hours (compared to 3,027 hours in 2007).

Participation at specific Programs was as follows:

TeenTuesdays (ages 12-18) Total from 3 sessions = 35
MagicTreeHouse book club (ages 5-9) Total from 5 sessions = 129
"Our Growing Community" book & gardening club (ages 9-12) Total from 4 sessions = 11

New Library Hours, starting in July

Due to town-wide budget reductions for fiscal year 2009, and the failure of a prop 2 1/2 override proposal, the Upton Town Library must reduce its hours of operation from 40 to 38 hours per week.
We will be closing 2 hours earlier on Friday afternoons.

Starting July 1st, 2008 our new hours are:
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10am-8pm
Friday and Saturday: 10am-2pm
Sunday and Monday closed.

If you have any questions about our change in hours of operation or other effects of the town budget reductions on library services, please contact Matthew Bachtold, library director.

Curious George visited the Library yesterday!!

It was a beautiful day on Friday afternoon, and approx. 200 people came to the library, between 2 and 4pm to meet Curious George!! Thanks to the Friends of the Upton Town Library, and Barnes & Noble of Millbury, for making this fun event possible!

(Friends of the Library volunteers offered snacks and face painting for a donation on Friday, and will be here again on Wednesday! THANK YOU, Friends!!)

Wild Reads at the Upton Town Library!

Registration begins THIS week!!! The first day to register for the 2008 Summer Reading Program, Wild Reads @ Upton Town Library is Tuesday, June 10th, but registration will be ongoing all summer long.

When you register for the program, you will receive a cool bag filled with surprises, including some discount coupons, a bookmark and your Reading Log, which you will use to keep track of the time you spend reading. Each clock on the log represents 1-hour, and for every 2 hours you read, you can choose a prize from our Treasure Chest! Stop by soon to sign up and start reading! Although you can start tracking your reading time as soon as you sign up, the Treasure Chest will not be open until after the official 'kick-off' of the Summer Reading Program next week, so the first day to get prizes will be on Thursday, June 19th.

Fun is Sprouting at the Library!

StoryTime has had a spring theme over the past couple of months, with stories about rain ("April Showers Bring May Flowers"), frogs , and ducks in April; and lots of flowers in May!

On May 15, we planted Sunflower seeds! After 2 weeks, I brought the ones we planted at the library home to transplant in my garden because they were getting so big!

I planted a few more at the Library so we can watch those grow, too! The kids who planted seeds to take home that day have been reporting their growth progress each week!

Last week we read stories & learned all about a different yellow flower, DANDELIONS!
Today we read stories and learned about sunflowers and the birds that like to eat their seeds! Here are some pictures of recent crafts we've done, including today's participation!
