Library Closing Early on Thursday ....

The Library will close early on Thursday, May 8th for Upton's Annual Town Meeting.

~ Our hours on May 8th will be 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

~ Town Meeting will begin at 7:30pm at Nipmuc Regional H.S. ~ Please plan to attend.

Music & Movement: Sad news ...

Not wanting to be the bearer of bad news, it greatly saddens me to have to tell you all that our WONDERFUL Music & Movement Program provider, Deb Hudgins, has informed me that she has accepted a full-time position as an activities-director in a senior assisted-living facility, and will no longer be able to bring Music&Movement to Upton on Wednesday afternoons. Her last day with us will be on May 14th, 2008. She will certainly be missed, as she has been a part of the weekly schedule at the Upton Town Library for more than 6 years!

Please plan to attend her last session next week, to let her know how much we've all appreciated her, and to wish her well in her new endeavors!

Our very-popular Music & Movement Program, held each Wednesday in the Town Hall at 1:00, will NOT be held on APRIL 9th. The program will resume the following week, but will not be held on the 23rd, during School Vacation Week. Music & Movement will continue until the end of May.

Wow! I just can't believe how quickly the time flies by! It's St. Patrick's Day already and I am just finally posting about our March StoryTimes!

Well, in case you've missed the past couple of weeks, we started off the month talking about the old saying: "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." We discussed what that means, in terms of weather, and sure enough there had been a big storm on March 1st!

Our Story Time on March 6th was all about LIONS!
We read ROAR! A Noisy Counting Book by Pamela Duncan Edwards, and Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen, and then made some very cute Lion masks out of paper plates and orange, brown and yellow construction paper.

Roar!!

On March 13, we started looking forward to a new season, and read stories having to do with Spring and the color GREEN, including Bear Wants More by Karma Wilson, Little Green by Keith Baker , and Camping in Green by Christianne C. Jones.

Then we decorated shamrock shapes with green collage materials for a festive decoration.

This week's theme will be Rabbits & Bunnies .... so hop on over to the Library this Thursday to find out which books we'll be reading, and participate in making a fun bunny craft.

Since we started the month with the Lion theme, we'll finish up March next week with stories and a craft about ... Lambs!

I've got some great books picked out for this one! Join the flock and have some fun!

Intergenerational Music Program

It is time once again to register for the next session of "3 Generations Sing" ~ an intergenerational music program, collaboratively organized by the Upton Town Library, The Upton Senior Center and Apple Tree Arts.

Our current session will end on March 11, and then we will start right up again the following week. This will be a 6-week-session,
held on Tuesday mornings from 9:15 - 10am,
beginning on March 18, running until the end of April.

The cost to participate in this program is $37.50 per child, for the six weeks. The ideal age for the youngest of the '3 generations' is between 2-6yrs old.
THERE IS NO MAXIMUM AGE LIMIT TO ATTEND!!!
There is also no cost for adults to attend, so please encourage your 'Life-experienced' friends, neighbors & relatives, to come along and join the fun!

Registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis, and there is a limit of 12 children for the program. Please contact Lisa at the Library with any questions, or to sign-up!

Some of the local teachers send me copies of upcoming assignments, so that I can put a collection of books together to help students and parents find what they need when they come to the library. I am in the process now of gathering books about National Parks for Mrs. McDonough's 4th graders, and Poetry books for Mrs. Lynch's 2nd Graders.

Hello All,

and Happy -belated- New Year! Sorry I haven't had a chance to post much lately - New Year's Resolution: Keep *Story*Time* Blog Updated!!! wish me luck...!

Anyhow, so far in February our Thursday themes have included Groundhog's Day/Superbowl Sunday (this was actually on Jan 31st) and included making a groundhog, who pops up to look for his shadow ... and he was also wearing a NE Patriot's helmet to be ready for the Big Game ... but we all know how THAT ended...
then last week we learned about Chinese New Year, since last Thursday was the first day of the Year of the Rat.

We made paper lanterns and discovered which animal year we were born in (I'm a Monkey!) and colored the animals on the lunar calendar.

This week we will celebrate Valentine's Day, since the 14th is on Thursday;

we'll have some festive stories and make cards for family & friends!

Next week, the day after our Wild West Magic Show, we'll continue with the Cowboy theme with some silly stories like
Little Old Big Beard and Big Young Little Beard : a short and tall tale.

Potter Party a Success!

I just wanted to say what a huge success the Harry Potter Party was, at the Library, on Friday night!! More than 100 people stopped in to enjoy snacks and arts & crafts, and to watch Harry Potter movies, between 4pm - midnight ... many staying the entire 8 hours! It was a really fun time, and would not have been possible without all the help from volunteers!! A HUGE Thank You to the Friends of the Upton Library who organized and shopped for the food, crafts and decorations for the event, and for all the wonderful helpers who set-up, donated and/or collected decorations, brought baked goods to share, and helped clean up at midnight! Thanks also to the ULTRA members who staffed the arts&crafts table all evening!

(Believe it or not, I think *most* of the glitter from the
magic wands actually got cleaned up pretty well!)

Summer Program in full swing ....

Well, we're off to a great start, with more than 400 kids already registered for the Summer Reading Program! As usual, the Treasure Chest of prizes is VERY popular with our young readers who are busy tracking the time they spend reading. And teens are submitting book reviews for their chance to win prizes, too, in a special teen-only weekly raffle.

Last night's Pajama StoryTime was a success, with several families attending in PJs to enjoy stories followed by a snack of milk & cookies!

"Read-to-the-Beat", the book group for ages 6-9 started yesterday, at Memorial School, with lots of happy readers leaving with a book to read and a very noisy kazoo they each created from a cardboard tube, wax paper, and lots of imagination!
(THANK YOU to all the parents who helped with that activity, especially Erin Alcott! I could NOT have pulled that off without her!)
We'll make a different musical instrument each week!

There's still time to register for "The Beat Goes On" the book group for 9-12 year olds. This group will actually be more of a theater workshop/drama class than just a book group! Participants are asked to read the 2000 Newbery Medal Winner, Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis and come to the first session on July 11 prepared to discuss the book and work on creating a skit based on the characters and story. This group will be directed and facilitated by Upton resident Jennifer Jo Davis. Please call the library for more info!
